As soon as you cross the Missouri River into town, the Discovery Center greets you along the river’s edge. With exhibits and hands-on activities, you’ll want to make this a stop for each life-long learner in your traveling crew. The whole family will find something to enjoy and appreciate while touring the Discovery Center’s educational experience.
In the center of Pierre, where the Capitol building is visible from nearly every block, you’ll find entertaining theater of both the traditional and on-screen variety. If a big-screen movie is what you’re after, Pierre’s Movie Theater has multiple showings available that will surely fit in with your available time in town.
Just a couple of blocks away, Pierre Players perform class-act plays throughout the year in the historic downtown theater. Known for their endearing theatrical performances, you’re sure to catch a show you’ll remember.
The Capitol building itself is available to tour or to sit in on a legislative session in-person beginning in early January. Some part of the building is visible from almost every point in town, making it one of Pierre’s most notable landmarks.
Continuing across town, you’ll come across a building literally tucked away in one of Pierre’s hillsides. A museum unlike any other, the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center encapsulates the history of our area and state in a distinctive, remarkable fashion. Whether you’re a history buff or seeking a memorable experiential adventure, this is a stop you’re going to want to be sure to make while in Pierre.
After a day of rigorous activity, you may want to relax with some set-your-own-pace fun. On the east side of town, Lariat Lanes has it all: bowling, arcade games, pool tables, and food and drink to sustain you while you play. Whether your traveling group is solitary, small, or large, there is a little something for everyone to enjoy at Lariat Lanes.
Before heading back to your hotel, or out of town on your way to your next destination, don’t miss stopping at the Oahe Family YMCA. With room to run (or swim), our local Y provides the perfect opportunity to stretch your legs and let the kids get their wiggles out.
