and buffalo hides. Learn to identify
the tracks of native animals.
See a dug-out canoe like those
used on Lewis and Clark’s historic
expedition. The interactive displays
of the Lewis and Clark Family
Center, located at Farm Island,
offer hands-on lessons in U.S. history.

> > Pierre’s First Schoolhouse

In 1882, two years after the Hughes
County public school district was
established, the local community
transferred a milliner shop into
Pierre's first school of learning.
Today, the schoolhouse is located
in Steamboat Park. Tours are
by appointment and can be made
by contacting the Pierre Area
of Commerce at 605-224-7361.
