Guard Museum
Established in 1862 as a frontier militia,
the South Dakota National Guard is
tightly woven into the state’s history.
The South Dakota National Guard Museum
in Pierre is the state’s repository for relics,
memorabilia and historical documents
relating to the guard’s activities from the
late 1800s through recent peacekeeping
missions. Open 9 am to 4 pm, Monday
through Friday, call 605.773.2475 for

Feel the difference between elk and
buffalo hides. Learn to identify the tracks
of native animals. See a dug-out canoe like
those used on Lewis and Clark’s historic
expedition. The interactive displays of the
Lewis and Clark Family Center, located at
Farm Island, offer hands-on lessons in U.S.
history. Open Memorial Day to Labor Day.

The Pierre/Fort Pierre area has the last
working paddlewheel on the Missouri!
The boat takes visitors on cruises of
the area and has a total capacity of 120.
It has a dining capacity of 84. On-board
beverage bar and catering is available.
