Each April, the Zonta Spring Craft Show brings more than 90 artisans from South Dakota, Wyoming, Nebraska, Montana and North Dakota to the Ft. Pierre Expo Center. In 2010, the show runs April 17th and 18th. (605) 222-9050 The Fort Pierre Fairgrounds host horse races each spring; in 2010, races are run April 24-25, May 1-2, 8-9, and 15-16. Both residents and visitors enjoy free access to all South Dakota state parks and recreation areas, including nearby Oahe Downstream and Farm and LaFramboise islands. In Celebration of state Capitol Centennial, there will be a city-wide celebration including a free lunch, kids fishing with Grandpa Don Rounds, Motorcycle Show, Historical Re-enactments, and Fireworks. June 19th. Pierre will host South Dakota's first Competitive Cornhole Tournament, Saturday, June 19th in conjuction with Oahe Days. Call 605-224-7361 to register your team. Headquartered in Pierre’s Steamboat Park, Oahe Days Arts Festival is a city-wide celebration that includes a art show, food, and live music. June 18-20. www.oahedays.com Pierre and Fort Pierre celebrate Independence Day with a rodeo, parade and fireworks. In 2010, the Fourth of July Rodeo will take place July 3 and 4; the parade begins on the morning of July 4. The annual Jamboree of the Fort Pierre-based Varmint Hunters Association will feature competitions, guest speakers and entertainment July 19-23, 2008. For more information on this family event, visit www.varminthunter.org The Bull-a-Rama, held in mid-August, brings the exciting event of rodeo bull-riding to Fort Pierre. 4-H Achievement Days are held August 11-14th in conjunction with The Bull-a-Rama. State 4-H Rodeo Finals will be held August 20-22 at the Stanley County Fairgrounds. This competition brings hundreds of 4-H youth from all parts of South Dakota to compete in events such as bull riding, saddle bronc riding, goat tying, ribbon roping, barrel racing and much more! Each fall signals the start of several sports seasons, including that of hockey. You can catch games of the local high school hockey team from October through March at the Expo Center in Fort Pierre. In summer, enjoy play among city leagues as you relax and mingle with locals at Pierre’s several softball fields. September is the opening month for Grouse Hunting. If you are looking to come to the area to hunt grouse the Ft. Pierre National Grasslands is the place to do it. For more information call 224-5517. October 16th marks the Opening Day for Pheasant Hunting. Pheasant can be hunted on private lands around the Pierre area or public hunting areas are also available.
More than 50,000 people celebrate Christmas at the Capitol each November and December. Nearly 100 trees are decorated in a theme by various organizations and displayed in the Capitol. The event also includes entertainment in the Rotunda, exhibits at the Cultural Heritage Center, story time in a children’s area and model train displays on the weekends. The 2010 celebration is November 25–December 26. There’s time to do a little shopping, too. The 2011 Legislative Session begins January 11th and will run 40 legislative days at the State Capitol Building.
