Sacagawea, the Shoshone Indian woman who served as a translator on the Lewis and Clark expedition, is believed to be buried at nearby Fort Manuel Trading Post.

The Buffalo Interpretive Center tells the story of the buffalo and its significance in Native American culture. Located on the Lower Brule Sioux Reservation, the center looks out onto a tribal pasture where buffalo graze. Open May–October. Highway 1806, Lower Brule, SD 57548. (605) 223-2260

Known worldwide as the place where Dances With Wolves was filmed, the Triple U Buffalo Ranch near Fort Pierre is home to more than 3,500 American bison, or buffalo. The ranch’s 65,000 acres of unspoiled prairie provide habitat for numerous other creatures, including antelope, deer, horses, coyotes and prairie dogs. A gift shop sells unique buffalo-related items, including buffalo meat.
