Life on the river

School age children have several options to choose from for elementary education and two options for middle and high school. Pierre is home to Capital university Center for those who want to continue their post secondary education.

Elementary, Middle and High Schools

The Pierre School District includes four elementary schools, Georgia Morse Middle School and Riggs High School. In addition to K-12 education, the district has a Junior Kindergarten program at Buchanan Elementary and two Early Kindergarten programs at McKinley and Jefferson Elementary Schools.

St. Joseph School is a private school offering elementary education and an after school program.

The Stanley County School District serves 450 students with a Junior Kindergarten program, elementary, middle and high schools in Fort Pierre and Cheyenne Country School outside of town. The Stanley County G.O.L.D program is an afterschool club which helps children with homework and provides activities between the end of the school day and the end of the work day.

After School Care

Besides the St. Joseph and G.O.L.D. program, after school care is available through the Boys & Girls Club of the Capital Area and the Kids Stop program at the Oahe Family YMCA.

Alternative Education

The Right Turn is the area’s career learning center which offers GED preparation and testing, the Alternative High School program and a variety of short term training programs.

Post-Secondary Education

Capital University Center is the oldest university center in South Dakota. CUC works with all six of the South Dakota Board of Regent universities to provide undergraduate and graduate level degree and certificate programs in both face-to-face and online formats.
