The Pierre area is the heartbeat of South Dakota. Besides serving as the State Capitol, Pierre and Fort Pierre are a unique mix where the old west meets new technology and the hustle and bustle of government is tempered by a plethora of things to see and do. Art and history abound and there’s no better place to sit back and relax. Where else can you work a busy eight- hour day, and still have an opportunity for a picnic lunch on the water?
Our community is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. With the beautiful Missouri River and Lake Oahe and five campgrounds and twelve parks, there’s no shortage of recreational activities. Fishing, boating, skiing, scuba diving, kayaking – just about anything you can think of to do on the water, you can find here. If you like hunting, you don’t need to go far to find everything from pheasants to prairie dogs. Over 50 miles of paved trail provide opportunity to walk or bike. Golfers take advantage of our two beautiful golf courses. For a little faster pace, we’ve got one of the best drag strips in the region and acres of off-road space to explore.
With a population just under 14,000, we’re large enough to meet someone new each day, yet small enough to see familiar faces at the grocery store. Our diverse economy is anchored by state government. In addition, agriculture, healthcare, construction, technology and tourism all play significant roles. The newly constructed Pierre Regional Airport has several daily flights to Minneapolis and Denver. Our central location makes it convenient to travel both across the state and across the country.
Our outstanding education system, makes this one of the best places to raise a family. Youth activities include soccer, baseball, hockey, basketball, swimming, gymnastics. Summer rec. and after school programs keep kids safe and active. There’s a robust arts community where people of all ages are encouraged to paint, dance, sing and create. We’ve also got an active senior community and a wide variety of clubs and organizations where people of all ages make connections and friends.
