There’s always something to do in Pierre. With a variety of activities, events and groups, you can be as busy as you want. Here’s just a sampling of the resources available in our community.
This area is best known for abundance of outdoor recreation. Hunting, fishing, camping and fun on (and under) the water take center stage. Pierre also boasts over 52 miles of walking/biking trails, a disc golf course and plenty of opportunities to golf.
Between summer recreation activities for the kids, Varsity and Junior Varsity school athletics, a variety of club sports, intramural leagues and programs for our aging population, all ages can find way to stay active year-round. Many clubs also look for coaches and/or volunteers giving residents a chance to connect on different levels.
Four museums help tell the story of Pierre and Fort Pierre. Groups like the Pierre/Fort Pierre Historic Preservation Commission and groups like that strive to bring history to life with various events held throughout the year. The South Dakota Historical Society, housed in the South Dakota Cultural Heritage Center is the premier resource for those interested in archeology, genealogy, state history, historic preservation and state archives.
Pierre has an active live music scene and several local bands. Pierre Players Community Theater offers several shows each year. The Short Grass Arts Council brings in world-renowned performers several times a year. Many opportunities exist for all ages to take lessons in dance, painting, pottery or learn other arts.
Unique stores line Historic Pierre Street with several more found at the Pierre Mall and in Fort Pierre. Some retailers like Prairie Pages Booksellers take the shopping experience to the next level by offering interactive experiences such as poetry readings, book signings and other special events.
Don’t want to cook? No problem. Pierre and Fort Pierre excel in offering
restaurants to tempt your taste buds. From four-star
restaurants, to the best steak in the state, you can find something to
satisfy every appetite. Favorites include fresh bagels and lattes in the
cybercafé, fabulous steaks overlooking the river, fresh walleye at the
marina, or unforgettable ribs in a lodge setting. Mexican, Chinese and
southern cuisine is also available. As the sun sets and the nightlife calls,
enjoy sports bars, an extensive wine list or a place that has the
neighborhood feel of Cheers.
